MATTEO'S PIZZA AND BISTRO

It's birthday season again and so on Tuesday night Mare and Nance picked Matteo's for their birthday spot. I was glad since I had been wanting to try this new restaurant by Matt Woolston the chef/owner of Supper Club. I had heard a lot of good things about Matteo but looked on Yelp to see what others had thought. All the reviews regarding the food was great, the issue most commented on was the service or the lack there of. So prepared but with an open mind I was ready.
Matteo's is located at the Five Points Shopping Center at Fair Oak/Arden. They don't take reservations under 6 people and there were 5 of us. We had scheduled to meet at 7:00pm and Mare was already there when we got there and had already gotten us a great table. We were in our own little alcove just off from the front door. We joined Mare and looked over the menu while we waited for Nance. I had looked over their special menu earlier online so I knew I wanted the Asparagus salad. While we waited the waitress brought our waters and we ordered drinks. After Nance arrived we got down to the serious stuff of deciding what we wanted. We decided on the Calamari appetizer (of course), the Asparagus Salad and the Spinach Salad. We asked our waitress about the size of the pizzas and she said they were about a medium which would be good for 2 people. We decided to get 3. We ordered the Stu-wild mushrooms, caramelized onions, prosciutto, fontina, arugula and truffle oil (anything is good with truffle oil), Matteo-Italian sausage, chorizo, pepperoni, 4 cheeses and a spicy tomato sauce, and the Spaniard-Romesco sauce, serrano ham, potato, green olives and Machego cheese.
The Calamari was nice and lightly battered and crisp along with thin battered onion rings. They were good but pretty standard. The Salads were excellent. The Asparagus was perfectly cooked asparagus spears with green olives, procuitto, feta cheese, chopped egg and a lemon aioli. The spinach was one of the best spinach salads I've had in a long time. Very fresh baby spinach with pears, blue cheese, spiced pecans, red onions and a honey vinaigrette.
All the pizzas were excellent. I think my favorite was the Stu and the Matteo. Thin crisp but chewy crust with the best toppings, perfect.
Service was excellent, our waitress was friendly and did a great job. She got a kick out of the fact that we really did eat almost all of the pizza, there were only a couple of slices to take home.
We had a great evening and the food was excellent. I haven't tried One Speed yet but so far I think this is a go to place for me if I want pizza. The do have other entrees also if your not in the pizza mood and they all sounded good.
Check out Matteo's menu and I know you'll be heading over there.
