MAHOROBA JAPANESE BAKERY

A new Japanese bakery opened a couple of weeks ago in the building that used to be a coffee shop in the parking lot near Akebono on Freeport Blvd. Across the street from Raley's.
I saw an article in the Bee about the bakery and had no idea what a Japanese bakery was. I took a run over there today to check it out and found it to be a little strange, it was certainly not what I was expecting. I got there around 11:30 and the place was busy. Now, I'm not sure if it was because of the time (lunch hour) that they had more savory pastries rather than sweet. I was expecting pastries, maybe some sort of cookies, cakes but what I found was Teriyaki meatball pan (bread), pepperoni pizza pan, bacon roll, hot dog roll, tuna pan and the strangest, shumai pan,and several other types of pan. The sweet pastries they had were the Sunrise roll, a bun with a sugar crust on top, Kobe Creme, Apple cinnamon roll, Creme roll. I saw them making a bun like pastry frosted with either chocolate or vanilla and sprinkled with almonds. They said that they had to be chilled because it was filled with chocolate and wouldn't be ready for a while. They also had raisin bread and white bread-French style. The breads looked good, light and fluffy. One slice was about twice the size of a regular slice of bread. I bought the Kobe Creme and the Apple cinnamon roll, Pizza pan and the shumai roll(only because it was so strange). The shumai roll was just plain weird, 3 pieces of shumai dumplings baked into a roll about the size of a hot dog bun.
The pizza pan was a little smaller than a personal pizza, a pizza bread(very light) with a few slices of pepperoni on top. The Kobe creme was a slightly sweet bread with a custard filling that was not too sweet and the Apple cinnamon roll was again a sweet dough rolled into the shape of a cinnamon roll with apples and cinnamon and a sugar glaze. That was pretty good. I want to go back one of these days later in the afternoon to see if they have more types of sweet pastries. The verdict? Other than the shumai roll everything else was pretty good. The pizza pan would make a good snack. The Kobe creme wasn't sweet enough for me and the Apple cinnamon roll was the best I think (after I picked out the raisins). I think I'm used to the European pastries that are sweeter. Maybe it's an acquired taste. I will go back just to see what else they offer and to buy some bread, but if I want some kind of Japanese confection I think I'll stick to Osaka Ya on 10th street for some manju. That's my personal opinion.

I'm sorry but that shumai pan is a favorite of mine. If you past that fact that it's unorthodox , you will find that it's reay good. I also love their newest addition which is curry croquette . So good !!!
